Blending Families

Blending families is a journey of love, patience, and grace.  This family structure is far from the seamless picture painted by sitcoms like "The Brady Bunch."

While the show made merging two families look easy, the reality is often far more complex. Challenges arise with loyalty, discipline, and alignment.

Children may struggle with accepting a new parental figure or sharing their parent’s attention. Yet, with preparation and intentional effort, blending families can lead to a rewarding outcome.

Bearing in mind that this type of family unit is not "a walk in the park," before saying “I do,” consider seeking Godly wisdom from those who’ve walked this path.

Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed.”  Pre-blending counselling can help you navigate potential pitfalls, such as favouritism or handling discipline. Talking to experienced parents can reveal unseen challenges and offer practical advice.

Fairness is vital in a blended family. Colossians 3:13 urges us to “bear with each other and forgive one another.”

Treat each child equally, showing love and grace while maintaining consistent rules. Invest time in building individual relationships. Take your stepdaughter out for coffee or your stepson to the movies. Actions often speak louder than words.

Blending families is tough, requiring years of effort, but with God’s guidance and unwavering love, it can become a beautiful testament to His grace and redemption. Shalom!
