A Lenten Refreshment: The Comfort of Jerusalem
This Mothering Sunday (the 4th Sunday in Lent) is presented as a pause in the Lenten wilderness, a chance to breathe, look up, and remember our spiritual “home.”
It recalls the tradition of returning to the Mother Church and often reconnecting with one’s earthly mother: a return to source, love, and belonging.
The meditation centers on two scriptures:
- Isaiah 66:13 shows God’s love as motherly comfort, God meets our struggles not with criticism, but with tenderness and consolation.
- John 19:26–27 highlights Mary at the Cross, where Jesus—even in suffering—creates a wider family, entrusting Mary and John to each other: “Here is your mother.”
Motherhood is described not only as biology but as a calling of the heart expressed by:
- comforting the weary
- nurturing souls with patience and grace
- staying present with those who suffer
The piece ends in gratitude for mothers and mother-figures, and in trust that all human mothering reflects God’s nurturing heart, with a prayer for comfort through Lent until the joy of Easter.
