A Steadfast “Hosanna”

As Jesus enters Jerusalem, the crowds rejoice, crying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Matthew 21:8–10). They celebrate Him as King, fulfilling the prophecy: “Behold, thy King cometh… lowly, and riding upon an ass” (Zechariah 9:9). Yet even in this moment of praise, Jesus sees what lies ahead. He weeps over the city (Luke 19:41–42), knowing that the same voices shouting “Save us now!” will soon cry, “Crucify Him.”

This reveals a sobering truth: the human heart can be quick to praise, yet just as quick to turn away. The people welcomed Jesus for what they hoped He would do, deliver them from earthly troubles, but not for who He truly is, the Saviour who brings peace through sacrifice.

Palm Sunday invites us to examine our own hearts. Is our worship steady, or does it depend on circumstances?

Do we follow Christ only when He meets our expectations, or do we trust Him even when the path leads through difficulty?

Jesus, in His mercy, continues forward, knowing our weakness, yet loving us still. He is not the King we shape to our desires, but the King who saves us in truth. Real peace is found not in changed situations, but in Him alone.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, as I cry “Hosanna,” make my faith steadfast. Keep my heart from wavering when life is hard. Teach me to follow You not only in celebration, but also in sacrifice. You are my King—today, tomorrow, and always. Amen.
