Maundy Thursday
The Last Supper.
The Gift of the Eucharist and the Command to Love.
On this holy night, the mood turns from expectation to deep, personal love. Jesus gathers His disciples, fully aware of what lies ahead, yet His focus is not on Himself, but on giving. In these final hours, He offers three profound gifts: humble service, Holy Communion, and a new commandment.
Drawing from John 13 and Luke 22, we see Jesus Lord of all stoop to wash His disciples’ feet. Though He knows He has come from God and will return to Him, He takes the place of a servant. “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). In this simple yet powerful act, Jesus shows that true greatness is found in humility and service.
He then breaks bread and shares the cup, saying, “This is my body which is given for you… This cup is the new testament in my blood” (Luke 22:19–20). The familiar Passover meal becomes something entirely new: not just remembrance, but relationship. Jesus gives not merely symbols, but Himself offered in love to sustain and transform us.
Finally, He speaks a command that reshapes everything: “That ye love one another; as I have loved you” (John 13:34). This is no ordinary love. It is patient, sacrificial, forgiving, even towards those who fail or wound us. Jesus loved Judas, who would betray Him, and Peter, who would deny Him. His love is steadfast and unchanging.
This Maundy Thursday invites us to sit at the table with Christ, to receive His love, to be cleansed by His grace, and to follow His example. We are called not only to remember Him, but to reflect Him: serving with humility, receiving with gratitude, and loving without measure.
Reflection
Who in your life is hardest to serve or forgive? Christ kneels before us all, inviting us to do likewise. When you reflect on Communion, remember: it is the living gift of His self-giving love. Let that love shape how you treat others, especially in difficult moments.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You who stooped to serve and gave Yourself in love, cleanse my heart of pride and fill me with Your grace. Teach me to serve with humility, to receive with gratitude, and to love as You have loved me. Write Your commandment upon my heart, that I may reflect Your mercy and truth in all I do. Amen 🙏
